Scissor Lift Showdown: A Battle of Height and Might
Scissor Lift Showdown: A Battle of Height and Might
Welcome to our elevated face-off where scissor lifts go head-to-head at our Arhaus Furniture project in Boulder, CO! This week, we went all out and put not two, not three, but four scissor lifts to the test, assessing them for safety, strength, speed, and overall sturdiness. Oh, and we couldn't resist peeking at their price tags and weights too.
Our journey kicked off with the formidable JLG 19' 32in Width Electric ES Series Scissor Lift. Weighing in at a solid 3,353 LBS and priced at $15,995, this powerhouse boasted a plethora of safety features. However, with so much emphasis on safety, we found ourselves teetering on the brink of reduced productivity. Plus, those extra frills like USB ports for gadget charging felt a tad overboard—do we really need more distractions on the job site?
Next up, we strapped in for a ride on the Skyjack 19' 500 lbs DC Electric Scissor Lift with E-Drive. Priced at $14,495 and weighing 3,255 lbs, this bad boy stole our hearts with its Herculean strength and lightning speed. It breezed through heavy loads like a champ and zoomed around the project site with ease, thanks to its impressive grade-ability and trusty non-marking tires. One downside, it's the only lift in our lineup with roots tracing back to the land of dragons and dumplings—China!
Then came the Genie 19' 30in Width Electric Scissor Lift with E-Drive, tipping the scales at 3,209 lbs and priced at $15,495. Neck and neck with the Skyjack in speed, but a safety override dampened our spirits when had the unit slightly overloaded. On the bright side, its on-board diagnostics proved handy for quick fixes on the fly.
Last but not least, we delved into the MEC 19 Ft. Micro Electric Scissor Lift with Leak Containment System. Weighing a feather-light 2,730 lbs and costing $15,595, this nimble contender may have been the runt of the litter weight wise, but boy, did it pack a punch in strength! Sure, it lagged behind in the speed department, but its integrated LCS kept critical functions running smoothly without a hitch.
And the winner of our scissor lift showdown? Drumroll, please! It's none other than the Skyjack! With its need for speed, hefty weight capacity, and wallet-friendly price tag, it soared above the competition. Floor Grinder Showdown
Step right up for the ultimate showdown in floor grinding tech! In this week's face-off, we pitted the mighty Lavina 30G Elite 3 Head Propane Planetary Floor Grinder against the sleek EDCO Magna-Trap® Dual-Disc 115V Electric Floor Grinder. Picture this: we tackled a tough, 40+ year-old concrete slab, stripping away layers of laminate and tile flooring to reveal the bare bones beneath. No stains, sealers, or epoxy stood in our way before we started grinding!
Now, let's talk results. The Lavina? A beast in the grinding game, chomped through the concrete like a champ. With its three-headed design, it covers more ground and leaves surfaces smoother than a jazz solo. Sure, it might cost a pretty penny at $22,900, but for big projects, the efficiency it brings is worth every cent. Just remember, this bad boy weighs a hefty 850 lbs, so no throwing it in the back of your truck without a lift gate!
On the flip side, we've got the EDCO. While it might not grind as swiftly as its Lavina counterpart, it's no slouch either. Perfect for smaller jobs or tight spaces, this $7,288 wonder is a solid choice. Plus, at a mere 260 lbs, it's a breeze to transport and maneuver, even with just a couple of strong pals.
Not ready to fork over thousands of your hard earned dollars for a new floor grinder? Great news, both of these machines are available for rent at any Sunbelt Flooring Solutions location across the US.
So, which one's the winner? Well, that depends on your project. Needing to cover a vast expanse with ease? Lavina's your go-to. Working in cramped quarters or on a smaller scale? EDCO's got your back.

Best Wet/Dry Vacuum Dust Pre-filter System.
In our rigorous comparison between the Bauer Cyclone Dust Stopper and the Dustopper Pro, conducted at our remodel project in Evergreen, CO, we sought to assess their efficacy as prefilter attachments for wet/dry vacuums. These attachments aim to eliminate the need for filter bags, thereby prolonging the lifespan of the vacuum's primary filter and reducing maintenance frequency.
Both systems were affixed to brand-new Rigid NXT 16-gallon wet/dry vacuums and put to the test in collecting fine silica dust generated by floor polishing tasks involving Lavina 30G Elite 3 Head Propane Planetary Floor Grinder and an EDCO Magna-Trap® Dual-Disc 115V Electric Floor Grinder.
While both products effectively filtered dust, our evaluation revealed a clear standout: the Cyclone. Several factors contributed to its superiority. Firstly, its cyclone design adeptly captured a greater portion of dust within its 5-gallon bucket, resulting in minimal dust escape into the vacuum system. Conversely, the Dustopper Pro, seemingly tailored for larger dust particles, allowed finer dust to penetrate into the vacuum, compromising air quality.
Moreover, the Cyclone boasted a larger capacity, permitting us to fill its 5-gallon bucket to 80-90% before necessitating emptying, compared to the Dustopper Pro's 20-30% capacity threshold. This higher capacity not only minimizes downtime for emptying but also prevents debris from bypassing the Dustopper Pro and entering the vacuum system once its limit is reached.
Lastly, cost-effectiveness played a significant role in our assessment. The Bauer Cyclone, retailing at Harbor Freight for $39.99, emerged as the more economical choice compared to the Dustopper Pro, priced at $59.98 before tax and shipping from popular retailers like Amazon and Home Depot. This considerable price difference, coupled with the Cyclone's superior performance and reduced labor requirements, solidifies its position as the preferred option for contractors seeking efficiency and value.
